BRINGING THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO INTO YOUR FAMILY ROOM

Over 130 years young, The Del celebrates its rich history as the proud host to celebrities, royalty, U.S. Presidents, and beach-loving guests for generations. In the 1920s, Hollywood’s stars made their way south to during the era of Prohibition. Celebrities such as Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Mae West, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Ginger Rogers all made their way to The Del.

Since 2021, Old Fashioned Lumber has been commissioned to work on a variety of projects which include turning unique reclaimed wood beams from The Del into breathtaking fireplace mantels.

Bring unique character and warmth into your home by remodeling with a fireplace mantel shelf that over 100 years. With their artisan accents, these hand-hewn fireplace mantels showcase the craftsmanship that went into the original construction of the hotel. Carved using a broad axe, this reclaimed hotel beam would be a true rustic fireplace mantel in your home or place of work. We custom these solid wood timbers to your specific dimensions and apply the right finish to complement its final resting place.
Milled over a century ago, some of our reclaimed wood mantels were rough-sawn and still show their distinctive circular marks. Commonly used as structural timbers, these wood mantels have a more even surface. Notch pockets, natural checking, weathered grain, saw marks and nail holes, guarantee your reclaimed wood mantel is one-of-a-kind.

Frequently asked questions

A typical mantel depth is 6 to 7 inches. This allows you to place decorative items on the mantel top. A mantel with a smaller depth may lose its presence and be disproportional to the fireplace. The depth of the mantel shouldn’t be too deep, however, since heat can become trapped and damage the mantel.

A mantel should extend a minimum of 3 inches beyond the firebox opening. If the fireplace has facing around the opening, the mantel can also extend 3 or more inches beyond that. Do not guess when sizing the mantel to a room, or the mantel could wind up being too long or too short.

The National Fire Code dictates that any combustible material (e.g., wood mantel or similar trim) must be at least six inches from the firebox opening. An additional inch of clearance is needed for every 1/8 inch the combustible material or trim protrudes.

Typical lead time is 7-12 business days, that depends on complexity of design and finishing.
